چکیده

In this experiment, the effect o f betamethasone administered in the early postacute infection o f mice by Trypanosoma cruzi was studied. This drug was administered during 30 days after the 42nd day o f infection in a dose o f 0.15 mg/day. The betame thasone treatment did not cause fresh outbreaks o f parasitemia and the histopathological findings in the chronic phase were not different from those in the control group. The higher cumulative mortality after treatment in the experimental group was due to superimposed bacterial infections. Outbred albino mice infected with low numbers o f Y strain Trypanosoma cruzi trypomastigotes were not suitable models fo r Chagas' disease, since after 7 months o f observation only mild histological lesions developed in ali the animais. Prolonged betamethasone treatment o f mice infected with low num bers o/Trypanosoma cruzi o f the Y strain, during the post-acute phase did not aggravate the course o f infection.

Effects of some fractions from Achillea biebersteinii and A.millefolium on the epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi

Higher plants are a potential source of new drugs to improve the treatment of Chagase disease, which is affecting 16-18 million people, with more than 100 million exposed to the risk of infection (Ambrozin et al., 2004; Coura & Castro, 2002). Current therapy is unsatisfactory, because the only two drugs available, benznidazole and nifortimox possess severe side effects and their activity is lim...

Regulation of Trypanosoma cruzi infections in vitro and in vivo by transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta)

The effects of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) on interferon gamma-mediated killing of the intracellular protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and on the course of T. cruzi infection in mice were investigated. Spleen cells from mice with acute T. cruzi infections were found to produce elevated levels of biologically active TGF-beta in vitro, and the possibility that TGF-beta may media...
